Americans are saving their paid vacation days to take time off following the release of the highly anticipated video game Grand Theft Auto VI.
According to The Wall Street Journal (WSJ), managers should prepare for a “work blackout.” It has been 13 years since the previous GTA installment was released, and gamers are treating the arrival of the new title on November 19 as an “unofficial holiday.”
One of the newspaper’s sources said he plans not only to take time off work to play the game but also to prepare several days’ worth of food in advance.
Variety previously reported that a US Army infantry division based at Fort Stewart in Georgia is offering service members four days of leave to play GTA VI if they extend their contracts by at least two years.
Lieutenant Colonel Angel Tomko told the WSJ that, so far, 44 of the 130 soldiers in an engineering battalion have extended their contracts thanks to the leave offer.
The fifth installment in the GTA series was released 13 years ago and is the world’s second-best-selling video game, with more than 185 million copies sold, behind Minecraft, which has sold more than 300 million copies.
