BAKU, Azerbaijan, September 1. Iran, as a
signatory to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons
(NPT), is fulfilling its obligations under the treaty.
This was announced in a statement published by the Iranian MFA,
citing spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei's remarks at a press conference
in Tehran.
“Iran, as a member of the NPT, considers it its duty to fulfill
the obligations outlined in the treaty. Iran’s position on nuclear
weapons remains unchanged and principled,” he noted.
Baghaei added that Iran considers nuclear weapons, as the most
destructive weapons of mass destruction, to be contrary to humanity
and civilization.
“However, the United States, as a party to this agreement and a
nuclear-weapon state, must bear responsibility. This is because
attacks were carried out against Iran even though it was fulfilling
its obligations under the NPT,” he noted.
Meanwhile, on July 8, U.S. President Donald Trump announced a
breach of the ceasefire and ordered new strikes against Iran. In
response, Iran launched missile and drone strikes against U.S.
military targets in the Persian Gulf region. Although Washington
has not ruled out the possibility of Iran returning to the
negotiating table, disagreements over security in the Strait of
Hormuz, Iran’s nuclear program, and other issues leave the future
of the peace process uncertain. At present, commercial shipping in
the Strait of Hormuz has once again come to a virtual
standstill.
