BAKU, Azerbaijan, August 15. Kyrgyzstan
continues to prioritize climate change adaptation and the
sustainability of mountain ecosystems amid growing environmental
challenges, a representative of UNESCO told Trend.


"In Science, Kyrgyzstan gives priority to climate change
adaptation and the sustainability of mountain ecosystems,
reflecting the country's high vulnerability to climate change,
glacier retreat and related natural hazards," the organization
said.


According to UNESCO, these priorities underpin the
organization's scientific cooperation with Kyrgyzstan and are
reflected in several regional initiatives aimed at strengthening
climate resilience.


The organization noted that one project focuses on reducing
risks associated with glacier lake outburst floods through enhanced
monitoring, early warning systems and community-level adaptation
measures. Another regional initiative seeks to improve
understanding of changes in glaciers, snow cover and permafrost
while supporting the development of national and subregional action
plans for climate adaptation.


UNESCO added that both projects promote scientific cooperation
among Central Asian countries while bringing international
expertise through partnerships with Swiss research
institutions.







Meanwhile, cooperation between UNESCO and Kyrgyzstan has
intensified in recent years as the country continues to implement
international recommendations on the protection of its World
Heritage sites.


The collaboration has included reactive monitoring and advisory
missions, technical consultations, and capacity-building activities
designed to strengthen site management, improve conservation
practices, and support the long-term preservation of Kyrgyzstan's
cultural and natural heritage in line with UNESCO standards.


According to Trend's analysis, Kyrgyzstan's focus on climate
adaptation reflects the increasing importance of protecting
mountain ecosystems, which play a critical role in the country's
water resources, biodiversity, and economic development.
Strengthening scientific research and regional cooperation is
expected to improve the country's ability to respond to
climate-related risks and support sustainable management of natural
resources.
