Azerbaijan’s Karabakh region and Romania’s Maramureș region have agreed to expand cooperation across several areas, including culture, business, investment and sport, the Azerbaijani Embassy in Romania said.
Elchin Yusubov, the Azerbaijani president’s special representative in Khankendi and the Aghdara and Khojaly districts, discussed the initiative during a visit to Romania with Ioan-Doru Dăncuș, mayor of Baia Mare, Caliber.Az reports per local media.
The sides discussed establishing ties between Baia Mare and Khankendi, launching joint projects, exchanging expertise and identifying investment opportunities.
Dăncuș proposed identifying specific areas for cooperation with Azerbaijan and the Karabakh region, including partnerships with Azerbaijani companies and opportunities for mutual investment. He also expressed interest in cooperation in the cultural, humanitarian and sporting fields.
Yusubov spoke about Khankendi’s 270-year history, its capture by Azerbaijani forces in September 2023 after decades of Armenian control, and reconstruction efforts underway across Karabakh. He also invited Romanian representatives to visit Azerbaijan.
The two sides agreed to sign a twinning agreement between Baia Mare and Khankendi.
During a separate meeting with Gabriel-Valer Zetea, head of Romania’s Maramureș region, the sides discussed establishing broader regional cooperation between Karabakh and Maramureș.
The discussions included plans to organise regional days and hold a business forum to promote economic and institutional ties.
Zetea accepted an invitation to visit Azerbaijan’s Karabakh region.
