Renewable energy sources are expected to account for more than 40% of Azerbaijan’s installed electricity generation capacity by 2035, Azerbaijan’s Deputy Energy Minister Orkhan Zeynalov has said.
Speaking during a panel discussion titled Cross-Border Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) for Regional Connectivity at Baku Climate Action Week 2026 (BCAW 2026), he outlined that Azerbaijan is leading the transition to green energy, developing both renewable energy capacity and cross-border transmission corridors, Caliber.Az reports.
“By 2027, 11 solar and wind energy projects with a combined capacity of 2 gigawatts will be integrated into our national power system. We expect renewable energy sources to account for 39% of installed capacity by 2030 and approximately 43% by 2035,” Zeynalov noted.
According to him, commissioning 2 gigawatts of renewable energy capacity by the end of next year will enable the generation of 5 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity, freeing up around 1.1 billion cubic meters of gas and reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 2.4 million tons annually.
“By 2032, we plan to develop nearly 8 gigawatts of onshore and offshore renewable energy capacity and export this energy through four interconnectors, supplying power to planned data centres and artificial intelligence centres,” he added.
