BAKU, Azerbaijan, August 7. Türkiye, Saudi
Arabia, and Pakistan have signed the Mecca Agreement on Joint
Defense, which establishes a military alliance.
This was stated in a statement issued by Pakistan's Ministry of
Foreign Affairs.
According to the statement, the agreement aims to promote peace,
security, and stability in the region and beyond, as well as to
ensure a safe and prosperous future.
The document was signed on August 7 at Al-Safa Palace in Mecca
during a summit on joint defense issues. The agreement was signed
by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, Saudi Crown Prince and
Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman Al Saud, and Pakistani Prime
Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
According to the document, an attack on any member of the
alliance will be considered an attack on all members of the
agreement.
“The agreement provides for strengthening collective deterrence
capabilities and enshrines the principle that an armed attack on
any of the three states will be regarded as an attack on all three
countries. In addition, the document provides for expanded
cooperation among the three states in all areas of defense,” the
Pakistani Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
Meanwhile, negotiations on the creation of this alliance, which
some countries are already calling the “Islamic NATO,” have been
underway since late last year. One area of cooperation within the
alliance could be the participation of Saudi Arabia and Pakistan in
the program to develop Türkiye’s fifth-generation KAAN fighter
jet.
