BAKU, Azerbaijan, August 20. Turkmenistan and
the International Organization for Migration (IOM) have discussed
expanding cooperation on migration issues and humanitarian
matters.
This was announced in a statement published by the Permanent
Mission of Turkmenistan to the UN, following the meeting between
the Permanent Representative, Vepa Hajiyev, and the Director of the
IOM Office to the UN, Per Liljaert, in New York on August 19.
The sides exchanged views on the current state of cooperation
between Turkmenistan and IOM, as well as possible areas for further
interaction. “During the meeting, the parties discussed
strengthening cooperation between Turkmenistan and IOM, including
possible areas of future cooperation,” the statement said.
The talks also covered recent developments in the region, as
well as humanitarian issues and migration-related matters.
Earlier, on August 14, Turkmenistan’s Foreign Minister Rashid
Meredov held talks with IOM Head of Mission in Kazakhstan and IOM
Coordinator for Central Asia Serhan Aktoprak. During that meeting,
the sides identified priority areas for cooperation, including
migration management, protection of migrants’ rights and
development of regional cooperation. Turkmenistan has been
cooperating with IOM on migration governance, capacity building,
and humanitarian initiatives. The engagement with the organization
is part of the country’s broader cooperation with international
partners on sustainable development and regional coordination.
