Azerbaijan is one of Tajikistan’s most important and closest partners, and relations between the two countries are based on sincere friendship, Tajikistan’s Ambassador to Azerbaijan Ilhom Abdurahmon has said at an event in Baku, Azerbaijan, marking the 35th anniversary of Tajikistan’s independence.
He outlined that the peoples of both countries are bound by deep historical, cultural and spiritual ties, common traditions, mutual respect and a shared aspiration for progress, Caliber.Az reports, citing local media.
“An indication of this is that during the period in question, President of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon visited Azerbaijan four times, while President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev paid three official visits to Tajikistan,” he noted.
He emphasised that the foundations of Tajik-Azerbaijani relations were laid by Tajik President Emomali Rahmon and National Leader of the Azerbaijani people Heydar Aliyev.
According to the ambassador, the Declaration on Strategic Partnership, signed in Baku on May 23, 2024, elevated bilateral cooperation to a qualitatively new level.
“This document covers virtually all major areas of our bilateral cooperation,” Abdurahmon stated.
He further said the eighth meeting of the Intergovernmental Commission on Trade and Economic Cooperation between Azerbaijan and Tajikistan was held in Baku in May this year.
“In 2025, trade turnover between our countries increased by 84%, while the volume of strategically important transit cargo transportation grew by 50%,” the diplomat added.
