Ukraine did propose a ceasefire to Russia, and the proposal was personally conveyed to Russian President Vladimir Putin, but Moscow did not respond, Head of the Office of the President Kyrylo Budanov said in comments to Suspilne.
According to Budanov, the proposal went beyond a halt to Russian strikes on Ukrainian territory and also envisaged a ceasefire directly along the front line.
“But the drones are flying, you have all seen it,” Budanov said, commenting on the situation after the proposal was conveyed to the Russian side.
At the same time, Budanov said U.S. President Donald Trump’s special representatives, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, are expected to arrive in Ukraine on Sunday. Their visit follows a planned trip to Moscow, with the two envoys expected to travel to Kyiv afterwards.
Budanov also suggested that Russia could refrain from striking Kyiv during the visit.
“I think there will be no strikes on Kyiv tomorrow,” he said.
Earlier, several media outlets reported that Ukrainian Defence Forces units had allegedly been ordered to observe a ceasefire along the line of contact from 00:00 on September 5 until 23:59 on September 8, coinciding with the planned visits by Witkoff and Kushner to Moscow and Kyiv.
