At least 10 people were killed and 64 others injured after pyrotechnic material exploded during a religious festival in Mexico State, authorities said.
The blast occurred on the night of September 5 near the Nuestra Señora de la Luz church in Temascalcingo, a municipality about 160 kilometres northwest of Mexico City, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.
Hundreds of people had gathered for a fireworks display as part of a festival honouring a patron saint when the explosion occurred, causing a wall to collapse.
The cause of the blast has not yet been determined. The Mexico State Attorney General’s Office has opened an investigation into the incident.
A local bishop said two priests were among those injured.
Videos shared on social media showed people moving through smoke and debris around the site as they searched for survivors.
Explosions involving pyrotechnics are relatively common in Mexico, where fireworks are frequently used during street celebrations and religious festivals.
