Nepal is observing a day of mourning in memory of more than 1,300 people killed in flooding along the Bhotekoshi River in Rasuwa district.
Flags have been lowered to half-mast at government buildings across the country and at Nepal’s diplomatic missions abroad.
The mourning comes as the country continues to grapple with the devastating aftermath of the August 26 flash floods, which struck after an ice-rock avalanche in the high Himalayas near Langtang Lirung triggered a sudden surge of water, mud and debris that raced down the Bhotekoshi and Trishuli river systems into multiple districts.
Beyond the immediate loss of life, the disaster displaced tens of thousands of families, destroyed thousands of homes and severely damaged roads, bridges and hydropower infrastructure across northern and central Nepal.
