A trilateral meeting involving the leaders of Russia, China and the United States cannot be ruled out, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said in an interview with TASS.
“The idea exists; it has been put into the public domain. It would be an exaggeration to say that it is moving into the preparation stage,” the diplomat said. According to him, the key issue remains the substance of a potential format and the results it could deliver.
Ryabkov stressed that such a high-level format would in itself be significant and could send important signals, as is the case with the RIC format involving Russia, India and China.
“The trilateral format involving the leaders of Russia, China and the United States has never been practiced before. I cannot rule anything out, of course. But from a practical point of view, I have nothing to add at this time,” the deputy foreign minister noted.
Earlier, Russian presidential aide Yuri Ushakov said Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping had discussed the possibility of holding a trilateral meeting with US President Donald Trump on the sidelines of the APEC summit, which will be held in China on November 18–19.
